UP Power Consumers Face Fresh Burden as Electricity Bills Set to Rise with 10% Additional Surcharge

Uttar Pradesh consumers are set to face higher electricity bills after Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited approved an additional surcharge of up to 10 percent from next month. The move comes amid soaring power demand, electricity shortages, political criticism, and government efforts to ensure uninterrupted supply during the summer season.

Even as consumers continue to grapple with rising prices of milk, petrol, diesel, and compressed natural gas, residents of Uttar Pradesh are set to face another financial blow. Electricity bills across the state are expected to increase after the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited decided to impose an additional surcharge of up to 10 percent on power bills from next month.

According to a report by Aaj Tak, the decision has been taken due to an increase in fuel surcharge costs. While the official electricity tariff has not been revised, the addition of the extra surcharge will result in higher monthly bills for consumers. The move will affect both domestic consumers and customers using electricity for commercial purposes.

The decision to add an additional surcharge of up to 10 percent comes at a time when electricity demand in the state has reached peak levels. Several areas are already witnessing power outages, while consumers continue to face challenges related to electricity shortages and irregular supply. Growing pressure on urban power infrastructure has also led to incidents of transformers failing in multiple locations.

The deepening power crisis has triggered sharp political reactions. Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav has intensified his criticism of the state government, describing Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath as unsuccessful in addressing the situation. He stated that Uttar Pradesh is currently passing through a major electricity disaster. The opposition leader alleged that the government remains occupied with review meetings and symbolic arrangements instead of implementing effective measures to tackle the crisis.

Amid soaring temperatures and rising power demand, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to ensure uninterrupted and quality electricity supply across the state. Officials informed the Chief Minister that the total electricity generation capacity of Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited has increased to 13,388 megawatts. This includes 9,120 megawatts of capacity from thermal power stations located at Anpara, Obra, Harduaganj, Parichha, Jawaharpur, and Panki. Hydroelectric projects are contributing 526.4 megawatts of capacity.

In addition, the state is receiving 3,742 megawatts of power through joint venture projects at Meja, Ghatampur, and Khurja. Non-conventional energy sources are also generating nearly 10,000 megawatts of electricity, providing additional support to the state's energy requirements.

The decision to impose the additional surcharge highlights the growing pressure on Uttar Pradesh's power sector as demand surges during the summer months. While the government has emphasized uninterrupted electricity supply and expanding generation capacity, consumers are preparing for increased financial strain as higher power bills take effect from next month.
